The southern part of the Alsace Wine Route

in Riquewihr - France

A few weeks ago, I was on business in Alsace and took the opportunity to explore the area on two evenings. Easter had already been over for more than a week, but interestingly, the Easter decorations were still everywhere.

Colmar

Colmar [] is the third largest city in Alsace after Strasbourg and Mulhouse. However, with less than 70,000 inhabitants, it is still pleasantly small and manageable. This is particularly true for the historic city center. In the late afternoon in April, the crowds of tourists were also limited. In the narrow alleys, you can always find nice insights and details.

Eguisheim and Riquewihr

Eguisheim [] and Riquewihr [] are probably the two best-known small villages in the Colmar area. One is located slightly south of Colmar and the other north. Both are about a 20-minute drive from Colmar. They are both very touristy and so it was very convenient that I was there in the early evening when most of the visitors had already left.

The town centers are relatively small and partly still bordered by city walls. It feels like there is a hotel, restaurant or wine bar in every second house. Fortunately, they are also mostly car-free. Both towns have large parking lots in the immediate vicinity of the "town gates".

In addition to the many alleyways with half-timbered houses, there are lots of lovely decorations to discover - as mentioned above, many of them had to do with Easter, but many others can certainly be seen all year round.

Selestat

Last but not least, I have a picture of the water tower in Selestat a little further north. Selestat [] is not one of the typical wine villages, but is geographically quite convenient if you want to explore Alsace.
