Michael's Photo parade 2018
First published in 2018
Twice a year Michael from the German Blog erkunde-die-welt.de is calling for submissions to his “Fotoparade”. The rules are pretty simple: You have to show at least 6 pictures shot within the last two quarters. He defines some categories, but they are more a suggestion than a must - you can change them or add some other.
So here are my choices for the different categories:
Landscape
When the long summer turned into autumn we decided to go for photo shootings to the Allgäu.
The Grüntensee is a water reserve built to control the level of the local rivers. You can find a blog post and some more pictures here.
Cityscape
One of the standard shots when visiting Hong Kong is Hong Kong Island at dusk or a little bit later when the laser show starts. Usually, people gather at the promenade where they can listen to the music of the show. The problem with this place is that it is so popular. Yes, if you are there early enough you can place your tripod in the first row and get your picture. But fun is something else.
This shot is taken from the cruise ship terminal and I shared this place with only a dozen or so photo enthusiasts.
Foggy
This is another picture from our autumn trip. This time we’ve been early, trying to capture the first sun after a very, very foggy morning.
View
Who says that a view is always top down? When you’re in a city like Hong Kong it’s also worthwhile to look straight up ...
Abstract
I was already on the way to skip this category, but finally, I decided to show this picture
I don’t consider it really as an abstract, as you can easily recognize that it is a stone. But at least the color pattern is interesting.
Red
This is another picture from my last trip to Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Observation Wheel is part of the skyline for quite some years now.
This is a 3-sec exposure, so you can see the movement, but still recognize the structure itself.
Yellow
This is one of the categories I added by myself. “Yellow” matches nicely with “Red” and it gave me the perfect excuse to show another picture from my visit to the Pilanesberg National Park.
Animal
I could have selected more than a handful of pictures for this category and still would have to leave out some that would have the potential for more.
In the end, I decided to show this one where the right lion looks directly into the camera. Well, in fact, it was not me he was looking at. You can find the answer in this short story.
Best-of
To name THE best picture is something I always struggle with. The picture of the Grüntensee would have been a good candidate and lion picture right above as well.
I ended up with this picture of Castle Neuschwanstein as it nicely shows the mood of this foggy, autumn morning and the fight between the sun and the clouds that simply don’t want to leave.
