All Saints Waterfalls and Abbey Ruins
First published in 2019
We spent the days around New Year's Eve in the Black Forest in Southern Germany. Usually, you have quite some snow there at that time of the year, but this year was different. It was slightly above zero degrees, grey and drab with some light rain once in a while. Perfect weather to photograph waterfalls.
The All Saints Waterfalls are very popular as they are easy to reach with quite some parking not too far away. Even in the morning on the first of January, we were not alone, but the few people walking up or down the stream were not disturbing at all.
Direct access to the different falls is restricted. You have to stay on the walkway, behind the barriers. So composing the picture can be challenging and you most probably will not be able to find a ”new” perspective. But the falls are nice and if it’s not too crowded you can get away with decent shots.
Near the falls you can also find the ruins of the All Saints Abbey. Nothing super special, but as the weather was dull I thought some black-and-white photography of a ruin would fit.
You can walk around freely, but this also means that it’s hard to get a picture with a lonely, kind of lost feeling. You can see too clearly that it is not completely lonely.
You find the All Saints Waterfalls near Oppenau. There is a huge parking lot at the Kreisstraße K5370 (48°31'49.1"N 8°11'20.0"E).
From here you walk upstream to the falls. If you pass the falls, you will reach the ruins and nearby a restaurant where you can have a break before returning to your car.
An alternative is to drive a bit further and use the street side parking near the ruins. Both alternatives work fine, but you find more parking lots in the first place.
