Decayed greenhouses in Ramholz castle park
The old Ramholz castle [↗] was built in 1501, but what you see today is mainly from a reconstruction in 1893. Over the years the ownership of the castle and the surrounding grounds changed quite frequently. In 2014 it was finally bought by a Chinese investor.
At the moment the castle and surrounding areas are closed. This also applies to the former manor house and the orangery, which used to house a popular café. The park, where you can find the greenhouses, belongs to another owner and is open to the public. It covers about 80 hectares and is one of the most important landscape parks in Germany. From here, you can also walk to another castle ruin nearby ( Steckelberg castle [↗] ).
Ramholz is a district of Schlüchtern, a small town near Fulda in the easternmost part of Hesse. We visited it on our way to the north right after we've been to the Jewish cemetery in Kleinbardorf.
When you come to Ramholz you'll see signs for the parking, that is not at the castle itself, but at the orangery mentioned above. From here it's just a few meters to the back of the castle and the park.
The decayed greenhouses are not really a secret, you can find quite some photos and even a Youtube video [↗] online.
I thought it was a single house, but there are actually several next to each other. The structure itself seems pretty sturdy, but most of the glass is broken. So be careful with the shards.
The most fascinating thing here is to see how nature reclaims the surroundings. Fortunately, you hardly see any damage caused by humans. Also, the usual smearings are missing. Please keep it that way.
