Plaza de España is the most memorable plaza in Seville. It was built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. Even being named “plaza” it also includes a huge, half-circle building, a canal with small bridges, and a fountain.

We visited Plaza de España three times during our visit to Seville. Once in the late afternoon and twice in the morning. The problem with the plaza is that the light is much better in the afternoon, but that on the other hand, it can be still very crowded. Even in the low season end of February, I had to be quite patient to get undisturbed shots.

Early morning it’s the other way around. If you are early enough the plaza is empty, but as the sun rises behind the building it’s more complicated to find a nice composition. But if you want to go for the details like the tiles on the wall representing the different provinces of Spain, you’re definitely better off in the morning.

The park around the plaza officially opens at 8 am but the gates might be open a few minutes earlier. This is the time you should be there. You might have to share the park with some other photographers, joggers, and cleaning personnel, but that’s fine. Half an hour later the first Chinese tour groups appeared and the later it gets, the more people will visit the plaza.

We’ve not tried to visit the plaza in the evening, but that might be an option as well. Especially in summer times when the sun goes down late and people are already on their way to dinner.
