Wetland Park - Hong Kong
First published in 2018
After picking up my tickets for the evening visit to Sky 100 (find pictures and an essay here) I went up to Northern Hong Kong to visit Wetland Park.
Wetland Park is a nature park in Hong Kong. It is not really on the bucket list for Hong Kong tourists, but quite popular with the locals. This 600.000 square meter area consists of different recreated habitats for plants, birds, or other animals. "Recreated" by the way does not mean artificial - this type of landscape is the way the area looked before more and more places have been covered by streets, buildings, or alike.
You can reach this park by taking the MRT to Tin Shui Wai Station (it's the West Rail Line, marked in purple) and switch there to the 705 tram. The station is just below the MRT, just follow the signs. You can leave the tram either at Wetland Park or one station earlier at Tin Sau. The park is 5 minutes away from both stations.
If you've never been to the New Territories, this also a good chance to see a little bit of the "real" Hong Kong outside of Kowloon or Hong Kong Island.
From a photographic point of view, the visit was not really a success, mainly because of the season. On the other hand, it was not sooo crowded, even it was on a Saturday.
The most interesting animals were the mudskippers, a fish that can also live on land. I've never seen them before and here you have dozens of them within a few meters. Another part of the park is a butterfly garden, not really big but with flowers that attracted quite some of them.
All in all the park is not really a must-see, but if you look for some nature and don't want to go for a hike, you might consider this as an alternative.
