Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord
The full travelogue is available in German language only. You can switch to the German blog here.
In my last blog entry, I wrote that there are at least two reasons to visit Duisburg. Besides Tiger&Turtle, for me, this is the "Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord".
The Landschaftspark is, like the Völklinger Hütte, a former coal and steel production plant. But it is not a UNESCO heritage and does not even charge admission.
Here you can see more decay than in Völklingen. But this is exactly what makes it so charming. They are restoring like in Völklingen and you can climb the different levels here as well, but you have much more freedom.
Some of the old buildings are also used commercially - like as a diving spot, for climbing, or as an open-air cinema. This way they make some money, which can then be used for renovations.
The variety of plants is overwhelming. You can clearly see how nature is reclaiming its territory. The ideal plant for brownfields seems to be the butterfly bush. It has been everywhere in Völklingen as well.
Unfortunately, we were not here on the weekend. Then the buildings are colorfully illuminated in the evening and that would have been nice motives too.
